You know when you’ve wanted to photograph someone for three years, and then they finally decide to get a little crazy and let you? That’s what happened here.

Catherine is my sister’s best friend, going back to 8th or 9th grade. I’ve been harassing her half of that time to shoot some photos, so I was completely elated when she gave the go ahead. She’s giving some of these to her mom for mother’s day, which I thought was a great reason to do this. Turns out a lot of the people I meet just don’t have descent pictures of themselves, and hiring someone to take their portrait sometimes feels odd or vain. It’s not. I think it’s a special and important thing to have natural, beautiful images of yourself throughout life. These aren’t glamour shots. I don’t shoot that way. It’s literally her, in a location we found while driving around the outskirts, and killer light. Once you’ve decided that it’s time, the rest falls together without fuss.

Derek + Ellen, Engaged

I just have to say that from this session there are about a million more images like this first one. That’s a truly happy face if I’ve ever seen one. These two made each other laugh the entire time, which makes me guess they’re probably always cutting up about something. I’m also betting their wedding photos might look a lot like this set, with different outfits. That’s a really good thing. I’m looking forward to December.

Yesterday. One Frame.
